Writing
"There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you."
Beatrix Potter
Intent
At Trinity All Saints, we aspire to nurture a passion for writing. We aim to foster an enjoyment of writing amongst our children, and for children to recognise the value and importance, and that writing is an essential skill. We are committed to providing high-quality writing provision across school, through well-sequenced, ambition lessons, for our children to develop their skills and become confident writers. Our children are immersed in a wide range of text types, allowing them exposure to a wide range of genres and styles of writing. The progression of skills within our writing curriculum allows children to develop the grammar, spelling, and punctuation needed to write effectively, adapting to audience and genre. Their creativity is nurtured through high quality immersion within the writing process, and children will learn to draft, edit, evaluate, and publish, resulting in fluent and coherent composition of writing.
Alongside reading, writing is at the heart of our curriculum, and we hope all of our students grow as writers during their time with us, taking with them the strong foundations we will provide them with to be successful writers.
Implementation
Our writing curriculum follows a sequenced of structures lessons, that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum framework. We begin with a discrete unit of learning, based on a carefully selected genre, which the children are then fully immersed in. They will engage in a wide range of engaging, creative activities that directly relate to the text type they are focussing on, ensuring that they are given the exposure required for them to write one themselves. We give the children high quality examples to read, so that the children see the high standards that are expected and are achievable.
Once they are immersed in the text, they will be taught the specific skills identified, that follow the progression of skills, followed by how to develop structures for their writing. Through high quality modelling, group work and independent writing, our children are provided the framework required to coherently write in a wide range of styles.
Children are then given the opportunity to edit and publish their work. At Trinity All Saints, we instil into our learners the importance of high-quality presentation and taking pride in their work. After their discrete unit of learning, children then follow a unit from the Literacy Tree, which is a novel based unit of writing, in which children are immersed in the text and given multiple opportunities to write in a range of styles. Then, children will complete an assessed piece of writing, which is directly linked to the novel they are using.
Impact
We are ambitious for all of our children and strive to ensure that we provide all children with the skills needed for them to become successful writers, no matter their starting point, additional needs or background. By the end of KS2, we expect our children to:
- Enjoy writing and view themselves as effective, competent writers
- Have a good understanding of the purpose of writing
- Write effectively for a range of audiences and purposes
- Have a wide range of vocabulary they can use within their writing
Our pupils will be supported yet challenged to reach their full potential in writing, and through the implementation of our writing provision, we aim to ensure all students make good levels of progress.
